Story Stones for Unspoken Feelings

🌿 Why It Matters

Some children draw their feelings. Some speak them. And some… just need a stone.

In When Something’s Left Unsaid, Quzii doesn’t explain. He draws, folds, hides, and waits.

For many children, especially those who feel deeply but share slowly, emotional safety starts with representation before language.
That’s where story stones come in.

🧰 What You’ll Need

  • 4–6 small, smooth stones (or substitute natural materials: shells, leaves, wooden tokens)
  • A soft basket or felt tray
  • Bronto or another anchoring plush (optional)
  • Space for quiet and observation

🪨 Activity: Make a Quiet Story

Step 1:
Invite the child to hold or examine each stone. No need to label. Just let them explore.

Step 2:
Say softly:

“Each stone can hold a feeling, if you want. It doesn’t need a name.”

Step 3:
Encourage them to:

  • Place a stone near Bronto if it’s a feeling they want someone to hold.
  • Place it in the tray if it’s something they’re keeping for later.
  • Keep it in their hand if they’re not ready to let it go.

Step 4 (Optional):
Draw a circle together - a “safe circle” for feelings to sit in. Place stones gently inside.

🌙 Why This Works

Children often process feelings symbolically before socially.

These stones become stand-ins for:

  • Anger they’re not allowed to say
  • Sadness they don’t understand yet
  • Joy they don’t know how to show

And by letting Bronto hold one, or placing it gently beside him, the child practices emotional trust - without needing words.

🧩 Classroom & Home Adaptations

In a classroom:

  • Use during transitions or post-conflict calm-down time
  • Let students choose a “stone of the day” for check-in

At home:

  • Keep a felt tray near bedtime
  • Use after tricky conversations to hold space for what didn’t get said

🧸 Bronto Says:

“You don’t have to say it.
Just give me something small to hold.
I’ll keep it for you - until you’re ready.”
