When Bronto Sat Just Outside
🧡 Bronto’s Journal: The Circle I Didn’t Step Into
Part 4: When Bronto Sat Just Outside
The walk home was soft in the way that only late afternoons can be - sky gone pale at the edges, trees leaning in with their shadows, sidewalk cracks lit with tiny golden slants of sun. Quzii didn’t speak much. Luna held his hand loosely, not swinging, not steering. Just walking beside him like someone who knew the day wasn’t over, even if school was.
Bronto was tucked under Quzii’s other arm, snug against his hoodie. Not zipped in. Not stuffed away. Just held - the way you carry something you’ve brought with you all day, not because you had to, but because it felt better that way.
Halfway down the block, near the hedge where the sidewalk dips, they passed a chalk circle. It was old. Cracked in two places. Smudged where a scooter must’ve rolled across. The color had faded, more ghost than line now, but still visible. Still holding its shape, even if only barely.
Quzii stopped. Not long. Not dramatically. Just enough that Luna slowed, looked down, and waited.
He crouched, carefully. Pulled Bronto from the crook of his arm. And placed him beside the chalk. Not on it. Not inside it. Just outside the line - where the color thinned and the sidewalk took over again.
Bronto didn’t wobble. He landed steady, feet flat, eyes tilted slightly toward the center.
Quzii didn’t explain. Didn’t point. Didn’t narrate the memory the way grownups sometimes want you to. He just watched for a moment, then picked Bronto back up - same arm, same spot, same grip.
Then they kept walking.
The circle didn’t need to be redrawn.
It had already changed - not in size,
but in meaning.
Bronto didn’t have to step in.
He just had to be close enough.
