The Stone I Didn’t Show

🧡 Bronto’s Journal: The Thing in My Pocket

Part 1: The Stone I Didn’t Show

The schoolyard was still mostly quiet when Quzii arrived - early, earlier than usual. The sky hadn’t made up its mind yet: sun coming through the trees, but just barely. Grass damp from the sprinklers. Bark chips damp too, but not enough to leave marks. Just enough to hold a soft kind of hush.

Quzii’s backpack hit the ground with a small thud. He didn’t sit. Not yet. His paw slid into the front pocket of his hoodie. Slowly. Not fidgeting. Not digging. Just… settling. He curled his paw around something smooth, cool at first, then warm.

The stone didn’t clink or click or sparkle. It didn’t glow. It didn’t do anything at all - and yet, it changed how Quzii stood. His shoulders went quiet. His breath evened out. Like the weight of it made his bones feel more true.

From his perch on the top cubby shelf by the classroom window, Bronto didn’t speak. He never did during mornings. But his stitched button-eyes had turned just slightly - toward the hoodie pocket, not the playground. Watching, not waiting. Noticing, not needing.

Max arrived next, loud as usual, paws wide, a grin already bouncing. He pulled something shiny from his paw and held it up. “Treasure check!” he called. “I got a sparkle coin from the cereal box - see?”

Others looked. Laughed. Ooohed just enough. Someone else had a string. Someone had a fuzzy sticker. Max spun in a circle. “Quzii! You got something?”

Quzii’s paw stayed where it was. He didn’t squeeze the stone tighter. He didn’t let go. He just shook his head once - short, polite. “Nope.”

Max shrugged and spun again. “Next time!”

The moment passed. The group scattered. But Quzii’s paw remained in his pocket, still gently curved. Still holding the thing he didn’t say.

Bronto didn’t blink. But the angle of his head didn’t change, either. He’d seen the whole thing.

The stone wasn’t magic.
But it mattered.

And today?
It didn’t need to be seen.
It was still choosing its story.
