The Drawer I Didn’t Open
🧡 Bronto’s Journal: The Week the Drawer Stayed Closed
Part 1: The Drawer I Didn’t Open
The hallway buzzed like it always did before first bell-shoes squeaking, backpacks thumping, folders half-zipped as everyone surged toward their cubbies with the same mission in mind: check the drawer, see what’s inside, leave something new. It wasn’t written down anywhere, but it was part of the school rhythm now. A small, silent game stitched into morning.
Lila reached hers first and gasped in the best way-someone had left a folded comic, one she hadn’t drawn. Rocco jammed a red crayon into his and slammed it shut like he was winning something. Max was already back for his second look, announcing to anyone nearby that he might have spotted a glitter sticker in the corner of his.
And Quzii?
He walked in at his usual time, eyes forward, backpack strap twisted, one shoelace nearly undone. He moved straight down the line of cubbies, past hooks and coats and notes pinned to walls, past his own drawer-his drawer, the one that almost always had something waiting-and didn’t even glance at it. Not a flick. Not a lean. Just one smooth stride forward and a turn into his seat like that part of the day didn’t exist.
He unzipped his backpack halfway, pulled nothing out, and stared ahead like he was already halfway through a worksheet no one had handed him.
Above him, tucked into the top shelf cubby, Bronto sat. Not slumped. Not upright. Just leaned slightly-just enough to face the drawer. Not the class. Not the group. Not Quzii. The drawer.
Not because he expected anything to happen.
But because he knew what didn’t.
Nobody asked why Quzii skipped it. Not yet. Nobody even noticed. But the drawer stayed closed. Quiet. Ready.
And Bronto didn’t blink. He didn’t shift. But his stitched ears were tilted forward, and his left paw rested on the shelf edge like it could reach if it had to.
Some adventures don’t begin with a bang.
Some begin with a drawer that stays closed.
Especially when it’s the one you always open.
